Вегетарианство и веганство нельзя назвать диетами, скорее они являются образом жизни, опирающимся, как утверждают его последователи, на осознанном отношении к этому миру и себе в целом. Отношение выражается не только в определенных правилах питания, но, первым делом, на проверенных нравственных, идеологических, медико-гигиенических представлениях, которые принимают свою реализацию в культуре питания этих групп.

По врачебным оценкам вегетарианство имеет ряд существенных недостатков. В первую очередь, это дефицит белков, витаминов B12, А, D, а также наблюдается затруднение в усвоении железа. Но, на самом деле, рацион вегетарианца может быть сбалансированным и полноценным.

Мнение общественности в отношении вегетарианства разнообразно, но по подсчетам ученых примерно 11% населения Земли следуют этому типу питания. Наиболее распространено это среди людей в возрасте 12 – 34 лет.Привлекательным вегетарианство для себя они находят в направлениях, которые оно пропагандирует, это – «следовать здоровому образу жизни» и «не вредить животным».

Хотя четверть из 100% придерживались мнения, что вегетарианство — это глупость, 24% считали это модным направлением, 30% обследуемых были уверены, что это дает физическое и психическое здоровье.

Исследуемая группа в основном состояла из студентов. Они относились к социальной группе, также участники были объединены возрастом, условиями жизни и одним родом деятельности – учащимися медицинских ВУЗов. Собственная оценка их здоровья показала, что состояние в целом на высоком уровне. Где-то 52% оценили уровень своего здоровья как положительный, 38% как хороший, не один испытуемый не охарактеризовал свое здоровье плохим. Скорее всего, это зависит от посвящения большого количества времени своему здоровью (так ответило 42 % опрошенных). 30% студентов видят пользу вегетарианства в том, что в фруктах и овощах содержится большое количество витаминов и микроэлементов. 15% просто считают, что растительная пища положительно влияет на организм. Отдельные студенты из числа обследуемых (а их 27%) полагают, что, имея в своем рационе мясо, они становятся соучастниками в убийстве животного.

          Половина обследуемых высказалась в отрицательной необходимости распространения вегетарианства и считают, что каждый должен сделать для себя выбор, а не поддаваться тенденциям моды в питании. Одни полагают, что вегетарианская еда  ведет к избавлению от лишнего жира, 60%придерживаются мнения о том, что растительная пища дает энергии достаточно для ведения активного образа жизни. Из них 70 % относятся нейтрально к людям, которые придерживаются вегетарианства, а негативно всего 5%. У остальных нет знакомых вегетарианцев.
По мнению трети опрошенных, в столовой можно получить полноценное вегетарианское питание. На основании этого, можно сделать ряд выводов.

          Выводы: Недостаточная информированность в вопросах сбалансированного питания, недостаточное понимание того, что такое вегетарианство и кто такие вегетарианцы, наталкивает на необходимость внедрять философию этого вида питания в народные массы для расширения кругозора рациона настоящего вегетарианца.
